January Night is a English translation of very popular story of Munshi Premuchand in Hindi, titled as \u201d Poos ki Raat \u2018. In this story Premuchand has pen- portrayed the life of tenant or small farmers.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Halku is such a tenant. He has to pay back the landlord some arrears. Then, when Jandlord asked for money he had only three with him. His wife Munni doesn\u2019t want to spere that amount which she had saved for a blanket to fight with the cold. But coaxing her, Halku takes the money and hands over to the landlord . His wife says him to leave tenant- farming which only bears insult and dare poverty and to work as a hired labour for some good life.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

At night, Halku comes to look over his field with his dog Jabra. He arranges some fire from broken dry leaves and dry sticks which was not sufficient to fight against the icy cold of January night. In deep night the wild nilgais attacks the field and eat up all the crop. There was only Jabra, breaking against them, but of no use\u2026..he couldn\u2019t scare away the wild animals. Whereas Halku dare not more from the dim fire, trying to sleep. In morning Jabra was found dead, when Munni awoke Halku and asked about the de- stroyed field. Halku delivered excuse that he had pain in his belly. Then at last, Munni said that now he would have to work at a hired labourer and pay off the rent and taxes. Halku was pleased. Now, he had note to sleep nights out in the cold.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n
